Preserving the Goodness: Introduction to Food Preservation Techniques
Turn fruit into juice using a steam juicer and into snacks using the dehydrator. Add salt to cabbage to ferment into sauerkraut. Protect dry goods such as flour and rice using a vacuum sealer. Compare boiling water bath canning to pressure canning, and learn tips for freezing your bounty.
Preserving your own food can lead to a lower grocery bill, more control over what is in your food, and the creation of less trash by reusing containers. In the middle of winter you can enjoy your garden harvest, or a bounty from a farmers' market, by preserving fresh food at the peak of ripeness. This is a hands-on workshop, no experience needed. Please bring a box and packing material to transport home 2 pint jars and 1 quart jar full of goodness. Participants are encouraged to bring a lunch to eat during the “lecture” portion of the workshop.
