What to the Black Woman is the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment?

This presentation by Dr. Susan Goodier, Assistant Professor of History at SUNY Oneonta, seeks to illuminate the experience of the suffrage movement for women of color in New York State and why it is important to better acknowledge their involvement in the passage of the 19th Amendment. Without a clear and comprehensive understanding of the social and political activism of Black women, we do not yet know the full story of women’s suffrage. Black women operated in complicated networks that stretched from community to community, from city to city, and from state to state. By looking more closely at New York State and its Black women activists, we can learn not just about the strategies Black women used to gain the right to vote but about the networks they created to facilitate this achievement.

Golden Mummies at the BMS

Golden Mummies of Egypt examines hopes and fears about the afterlife when Egypt was part of the Greek and Roman worlds (c. 300 BC-200 AD). The exhibition consists of over 100 key objects from the Manchester Museum’s world-class collection, including eight mummies, as well as masks, coffins, jewelry and sculpture. Blending Egyptian, Roman and Greek imagery, the strikingly lifelike painted mummy portraits are among the most haunting images from the Ancient World. Using interactive CT scan technology, Golden Mummies of Egypt reveals stories hidden beneath the wrappings, but also questions why we are fascinated by mummies and what they might tell us about ourselves.

Birdsong: Audio-Visual Art by Charles E. Burchfield at the Burchfield Penny

Charles Burchfield loved birds. He delighted in greeting harbingers of spring, camouflaged woodland warblers, and raucous crows, to name just a few. Journal entries recount his sightings as well as birdsongs—especially when they could be heard, but not seen. In all seasons, birds appear as both major subjects and compositional elements of his paintings, drawings, wallpapers, prints, and doodles. Burchfield had a neurological condition called synesthesia that allowed him to see the sounds of birds and the interpretation of these sounds appears in his art. This exhibition features a variety of media, including paintings and never-before-seen drawings from our collection in which Burchfield studies bird physiology as a naturalist would and experiments with ways to represent each unique birdsong—a visual audio-guide to pay homage to the uplifting sounds of nature.
