Saturday, December 12th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the Buffalo Museum of Science proudly presents Celebrations.  This NEW Audience Engagement Event, will showcase the Science Studio, “Artifacts” and celebrate cultural traditions from around the world with family-fun activities for all ages.  The event is included with general museum admission and free for Buffalo Museum of Science members.  Tickets are available at the door on the day of the event.

Hands-on activities will take place throughout the day at the Museum.  You may have sung “yuletide carols,” but do you know the meaning of yuletide? Learn the history of the yuletide and create a small yule log to hang at home.  How much do you know about the eight-legged arachnid? Learn the Ukrainian legend of the Christmas spider and create your own spider web. Customary by many Greek Orthodox, create your own Christmas boat in lieu of a tree.  Inspired by Diwali, a Hindu celebration known as the festival of lights, construct a Rangoli decoration for good luck and welcoming visitors.  Learn how to play the traditional Jewish game of dreidel and make your own.  You will discover the origins of this game from the Germanic teetotum and learn some Hebrew as well!  The New Year is celebrated differently across the globe and visitors will be constructing a kadomatsu for their home, a traditional Japanese New Year (Shōgatsu) gift and decoration.

Guests will also be able to take an international tour and purchase unique holiday gifts at our world market.  The Market will feature a variety of vendors that offer hand knit goods, jewelry, alpaca products, reclaimed wood art, fuse glass art, prints, custom wood frames and Buffalo themed prints and artwork. Cultural performances by local groups will take place throughout the day and include Amor and Heritage Hispanic Traditional Dance Company with dance and tutorials for children, The Slyboots Drum and Dance Ensemble with a music and dance performance and Ongwehoñwe Singers and Dancers, a Haudenosaunee Native American performance group.

In addition, guests will be able to experience National Geographic Entertainment’s inspiring film, Jerusalem 3D, for a limited time in the National Geographic Cinema, presented by M&T Bank.  The Washington Post writes of the film, “It may be as close as a person can get to praying at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Western Wall, without actually going there.”  This eye opening 3D tour of one of the world’s oldest and enigmatic cities takes viewers on a journey of the city through the eyes of the people that call it home.  Jerusalem will be shown only on December 12th and 13th.  Admission to the Cinema is $2.00 for BMS Members and $4.00 for non-members.  Non-members are required to purchase general admission in order to experience the film.
