Earth Day Rails to Trails Clean Up

*The event has already taken place on this date: Sat, 04/23/2016
The Town of Tonawanda Youth, Parks and Recreation Department in conjunction with National Fuel are looking for volunteers to help clean up the new Rails to Trails path on Saturday, April 23, in celebration of Earth Day.

Please help us keep this calendar up to date! If this activity is sold out, canceled, or otherwise needs alteration, email mindy@kidsoutandabout.com so we can update it immediately. If you have a question about the activity itself, please contact the organization administrator listed below.

Actual construction of the new trail that runs through the Town of Tonawanda, atop a former railroad bed, was started in 2015 by Erie County and a private contractor. The trail is expected to officially open in late spring this year. Once opened, it will be maintained by the Town of Tonawanda Youth, Parks and Recreation Department through an agreement with the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority.
“We are really excited to get this trail cleaned up and for the public to be able to start using it this summer. It will be a great addition to our other parks and facilities in offering a place for people to enjoy nature and get fit,” says Dan Crangle, Town Councilman and Chairman of the Youth, Parks and Recreation Committee.
Volunteers are asked to meet at Lincoln Arena (1200 Parker Blvd, Tonawanda, NY 14223) at 8:30am to receive assignments. You may need to get yourself to a different part of the path, depending on where you are assigned, so please be prepared to provide your own transportation. Dress appropriately for weather, this project will take place rain or shine. Pants, long sleeves, gloves, and boots are encouraged.
This is a great event for families, neighbors, sports teams, youth groups, and coworkers to get involved in their community and become stewards of this new walking and biking path. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
Donuts, pizza, and drinks will be provided, courtesy of National Fuel. Parking and restrooms available at Lincoln Arena and Kenny Field.
Please contact Town of Tonawanda Youth, Parks & Recreation with questions at 831-1001 or nfields@tonawanda.ny.us. Sign up to volunteer online by clicking the SignUpGenius link below.
