The best way we can impact others in our lives is to inspire them with acts of kindness.

Kindness is kinetic – it’s going out and doing good deeds, giving others a hand, even making people smile. Whatever it is, every little bit of kindness goes a long way. This year we are asking for creative and inspiring ideas to help us build the best caring and positive community we can. The youth of today are the advocates of the future.

Since 1892, the SPCA’s Humane Education Department has conducted this contest for the Erie County students.

Lucy Lord, the founder of the Humane Education Department at the SPCA, created the contest to promote kindness to all living things. The contest has been passed down for generations. Judy Silver, a great, great, granddaughter of Lucy Lord, administered the contest until 2001. Even today, ancestors of Lucy Lord participate and support this program for the students, teachers, and families throughout Erie County. This contest has been a family tradition for years and is a piece of treasured SPCA history.

This year we are anticipating students ideas will spark and make a huge impact in our county. Participating students have the chance to win prizes by demonstrating their creativity by writing a composition or illustrating a poster to help build a more humane and kinder community. We also have the Ambassador of Kindness and Humane Educator of the Year awards which are great ways for teachers to honor the humane work of their students and celebrate the work of their colleagues.
