Campers who are 15 years of age prior to date attending camp can participate in this two-week special program for teens. LITs help set their own schedule and spend time doing activities with an emphasis on teambuilding, character and leadership development, event planning, group management, and fun. Camp service projects, a two-day kayak and hiking trip to nearby Golden Hill State Park, and the opportunity to lead camp program activities are examples of highlights of the program. Some of the objectives that will be covered during the two week session include:
- Defining a Leader - Determining Leadership Styles
- Effective Leadership - Group Communication Exercises; Goal Setting; the Science of Leadership
- Group Motivation - Group Cohesion; Encouraging Volunteerism From Participants; What Makes Service Projects So Important
- Public Speaking - Body Language; Finding Your Voice; Storytelling to Persuasive Speaking
- Stages of Team Development - Getting to Know Participants; Conflict Resolution; Developmental Characteristics
- Instilling Confidence in Others- Positive Consequence Planning;
- Event and Activity Organizing - Event Planning; Risk Management; How To Improve Existing Activities
- Transition from Participant to Leader - Leading and Participating; Building Culture
- Critical Thinking - Problem Solving; Organizational Challenges; Proactive Creativity
- Leadership Through Technology - Translating Motivation Across Platforms; How Technology Affects Meetings
This is a great program that helps transition campers to counselors and encourages teens to bring these skills throughout camp and back to their schools and communities. Each session contains different activities aimed at the objectives above that will grow the unique and individual teens that attend. Participants in the LIT program leave with a better sense of being able to lead at home, in school, and among their peers. Spots are limited and fill up quickly!

At YMCA Camp Kenan, we place great emphasis on training and developing our future staff members as they transition from camper to counselor. Campers who are 16 years of age prior to date attending camp or who have completed our LIT program may apply for this exceptional three week Counselors in Training (CIT) program. The CIT program provides formal training for young adults who enjoy camping and working with children. The first week of the session is an intensive week of training and workshops run by the teen leadership director and administrative staff. This week is very similar to our staff training week, and will prepare the CITs for the challenges and rewards of being a camp counselor. CITs are assigned to a cabin group during their second and third weeks, where they shadow and learn from the cabin counselors. CITs are evaluated by both their counselors and by the teen leadership director, receiving feedback on their performance each week. Once their session has been completed, CITs may be invited to apply for current available positions and/or the next summer’s positions.
YMCA Camp Kenan is proud to provide this program at a discounted rate. More than half of our current staff members have completed both the LIT and CIT programs. Early registration is important for this program because the application process may take time and spots are limited to ensure the highest quality instruction and experience for all participants. For more information, contact the camp director at 716.434.8887, ext 35 or pick up an application at the Lockport Family YMCA, 19 East Avenue Lockport, NY 14094.
